Through 24/7 maritime monitoring and proactive communication, Royal Dirkzwager helps North Sea Farmers maintain a safe and controlled environment for offshore innovation at the Offshore Test Site.

Supporting safe offshore innovation: Royal Dirkzwager and North Sea Farmers

The development of multifunctional offshore use requires innovation, collaboration and reliable maritime monitoring. North Sea Farmers facilitates the Offshore Test Site in the North Sea, where six dedicated plots allow different offshore activities to be tested and developed.

To ensure safe maritime operations around this location, North Sea Farmers works together with Royal Dirkzwager, which provides continuous nautical monitoring and operational support.

Offshore Test Site: enabling multifunctional offshore use

The Offshore Test Site offers six plots in the North Sea where innovative offshore applications can be researched and validated. These activities include combinations of renewable energy generation, food production, ecological development and other forms of multi-use within existing offshore areas.

Operating in the open sea also brings specific challenges. These include safeguarding installations and experimental setups, monitoring vessel movements around the six plots, identifying potential risks in time, protecting infrastructure and research activities, and coordinating with other users of the North Sea.

A controlled and safe maritime environment is therefore an essential condition for the successful development of these offshore innovations.

The role of Royal Dirkzwager

Royal Dirkzwager provides 24/7 nautical monitoring and support for the Offshore Test Site. From the Maritime Information Center, Royal Dirkzwager monitors vessel traffic in and around the six plots and maintains situational awareness of maritime activities in the surrounding area.

  • Continuous monitoring of AIS and radar data
  • Active identification of approaching vessels
  • Proactive communication with relevant stakeholders
  • Reporting and operational support in case of incidents

By providing real-time insight into maritime movements and potential risks, Royal Dirkzwager helps ensure that the Offshore Test Site remains a safe and controlled environment for offshore experimentation and development.

Safety as the foundation for offshore innovation

Multifunctional use of offshore space plays an important role in the sustainable development of the North Sea. However, new offshore activities can only scale successfully when safety, monitoring and information management are professionally organised.
